Every year from 3rd - 5th August, the small town of Sinj near Split in Croatia celebrates the Battle of Sinj - a battle which saw 700 Croats defeat 60,000 Turkish soldiers. The three-day Tilters Tournament, known as the Alka festival, dates back to 1715. The festival is celebrated with a jousting contest, performed by competitors in full 18th century costume, followed by a street party with music, dancing and plenty of good Croatian fare.
