It is held on this date because it marks one of the most important milestones in the tourist industry- the adoption of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) Statutes, on this very day in 1970.

Every year, on the last Wednesday of August, the tiny Spanish village of Bunyol, near Valencia, hosts possibly the world’s largest tomato fight. From 11am, the village becomes a battle zone as inhabitants and visitors alike squash their tomatoes and throw them at each other in quick succession. The event is said to be a tradition that was started when, back in 1945, some locals started a food fight that got slightly out of hand…and the rest is now history!
